Harry Potter sword replicas sold at a theme park in Japan have been recalled for being too authentic, potentially violating the anti-weapons law, Warner Bros. Studios Japan and media have said.

The decorative Gryffindor swords, sold by Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo, fell foul of Japan’s weapons laws, which are among the strictest in the world.

Under Japan’s strict weapons law, carrying knives over 6cm (2 inches) is banned, with violators facing up to two years in prison. Replicas that are sharp enough to be classified as swords under the Firearms and Swords control law must be registered with authorities - unless the swords are meant for training or decoration and cannot be sharpened.

Replica swords sold at the Harry Potter theme park in Tokyo are being recalled for violating Japan’s strict weapons control law. The Making of Harry Potter theme park opened in Nerima ward last year and features recreations of settings from the popular films as well as props and costumes used during filming.

While the blade’s edges are dull, the stainless steel sword's sharp tip has led authorities to classify it as a weapon grade sword under Japan’s Firearm and Sword Possession Control Law.
